Shifen

A romantic day trip from Taipei

A day in Shifen is a uniquely Taiwanese experience. The former coal mining town has been transformed into a tourist wonderland providing great food, activities, and a lot of cool things to see. Nestled in New Taipei’s Eastern district of Pingxi, Shifen is a collection of streets and natural landscape centred around a railway station that is still in service today.

Shifen Old Street is usually visitors primary spot and is famous for Pingxi’s signature activity of sending Chinese sky lanterns. Lanterns cost around NTD$150 for a single coloured lantern (which symbolises one virtue) or a four coloured lantern for NTD$200 (symbolising many virtues). Customers are invited to write their wishes for the future and confessions of love on the lanterns before posing for Instagram photos and letting them off into the sky.
